Kauai Hawaii Vacation
Question: Is the first week of October a good time to go on vacation in Kauai (Hawaii)? Is October high or low season? Will it be crowded? What will the weather be like? We plan to travel with 75+ yr olds and a 9 yr old, we are in our 30's. We plan to get a package that includes air, hotel & rental car, any tips?
Answer: try www.vrbo.com for lodging
Question: What is a must do while vacationing in Kauai, Hawaii? What is a must do while vacationing in Kauai, Hawaii?
Answer: Go to Coconuts restaurant in Kapaa. It's pricey, but they have excellent seafood.
Go to Waimea Canyon. You can pull over and stop along he way up to see some interesting sights, particularly the part that looks like the Grand Canyon on a smaller scale. Eventually, you'll come to a parking lot where the road is chained off and you can't go any further. Park here and walk a couple miles up the hill.
Eventually the paved road disappears and you're on a dirt/mud path through the jungle. When you get to an open path with a dirt embankment on your left, look over the embankment. There you'll see a sheer drop-off through the jungle out to the sea thousands of feet below. If it's not fogged over, you should be able to see about a half dozen rainbows, as the rainclouds pass one after the other. It's truly spectacular. If you feel up to it, you can continue on a couple more miles to the top of the hill, where you will find a metal plaque on the ground saying that you have reached the rainiest spot on Earth, with some 495 inches of rain a year.
For snorkeling, the best place is Ke'e Beach Park, up by Princeville. Just follow the main highway north past Princeville until it ends. There you'll find a bay that's protected by coral reefs a couple hundred yards out. The water is very clear and the fish are abundant. Access is also very easy. Poipu Beach to the south of the island is also good for snorkeling. To the east of Poipu Beach is Brennecke Beach. This is an expansive sand beach, if that's what you're looking for. Across the street from the beach is a restaurant called Brennecke's Broiler that has an open air dining room on the second floor that looks out to the ocean. It's very lively and loud, but great for a happy hour if you can get in (it's a very popular spot).
The best boat tour is a sunset cruise to the Na Pili coast. This is where the sheer cliffs are that you look down on from the top of Waimea Canyon. The cliffs, the jungles, and the rock formations are stunning. And, you'll likely attract a pod or two of dolphins along the way who will swim along side your boat. And, from December through April is whale season. If you go then, you're sure to see some whales as well.
I would say don't bother with the fern grotto. There's not much to it. There's basically a rock formation under this growth of tree canopies that's dripping wet from the rainfall, and there's a lot of types of ferns growing on the walls. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by boat up the river, and then about a 5 minute walk. But, when you get there, you're like "That's it?"
Question: how do i get the best deal on a hawaii vacation (maui or kauai)?
Answer: I recommend staying at least 10 days. There is lots to see and do if you have never been there. Maui is our personal favorite. This is a pretty good deal if you are looking for a family friendly decent resort:
http://www.sunterramaui.com/kaanapali/
Free rental car, nice buffet breakfast every morning, free cocktails every evening for 2 hours and other freebies as well. We did this last year and were quite happy with it.
If you want to go super-cheap, there are various camping areas.
Maui accomodations can be found here:

Kauai here:

Good luck with your search and ultimately, your vacation.
Question: Are there any great stores that sell HELLO KITTY in kauai hawaii? I collect HK and im going on vacation to Kauai, does anyone know if there are any cool stores that sell Sanrio stuff?......Japanese Markets? Flea Markets? Ideas?
Answer: I used the store locater the previous poster gave, and I searched Lihue. If you're going to stay in that area then there are two places to buy Hello Kitty stuff. Follow the link:

Question: Is it worth moving to Kauai, Hawaii? I was recently offered a transfer by my company to move from the bay area, california to Kauai, hawaii and take a position there making 50k salaried a year. I've taken vacations to Kauai in the past and have always considered it my favorite island and an amazing place. Would the cost of living really be all that different from the bay area? Would it be worth it?
Answer: It really depends on your living standards. My family could live very well on your salary on Kauai, but we're very conservative. If you want a big house, and many luxuries rather than regular island life, you might have problems. Living and eating island style you would do well however; many mainlanders want a rich lifestyle. So to answer your question, it depends on your families lifestyle. Another thing to remember is that Kauai is a small community and very different from living in the Bay area. Being a tourist and a full time resident is also very different. If you go there and act more like a tourist or visitor, it will cost much more, if you assimilate and become part of the community, it can be very affordable. Keep in mind most locals don't make 50k a year. You may need to fly/float to the other islands on a regular basis to get certain supplies and foodstuff. If you are a little conservative in your living standards, you should be fine. If you are into the "finer" or "fancier" things, you may have a problem. For my family, we could live on less $ on Kauai than what it would cost in the Bay area. Worth it? Depends on what you want in life. I think the experience living on an island and learning another culture is very rewarding, even if you only do it for a year. But some people can't stand island life, so it comes down to your individual preferences.
Question: I'll be vacationing in December in Kauai, Hawaii is there a state regulation for bringing your dog?
Answer: Yes there is a state regulation regarding bringing anything alive into Hawaii, even plants. This is strictly enforced. Your dog would need to have all of the shots and then be quarantined at your expense for a minimum of 30 days. I don't know as much about Kauai, but it is near impossible for someone to get a pet out of quarantine on Maui.
I would recommend to contact your airline first to see what they require to bring your dog to Honolulu. Most likely your dog would be held there of the 30 days then it would be up to Kuai if they wanted to accept the dog after that. Some breeds might not be acceptable and this is too important to take a Yahoo Answer about as I am sure you love your dog like a family members. So the next step would be to contact the Health Dept, then Animal Control on Kauai. There are plently of dogs already on the island but that isn't your dog.
I honestly lost a 3 year old Chinese Carp that I had really become fond of. I am from Maui but didn't realize the restriction would apply to fish, The airline would not let me take him on so I had to call everyone I knew to get someone to come to the airport to pick him up. He was still alive 3 years after that but haven't heard since.
Good luck, but please check with everyone on this, and don't take any one person's word for it including anything I have said.
Question: thinking of moving to Hawaii. I was in Kauai last year and loved the lifestyle. Yeah it was a vacation,but...? I loved the opportunities. I will probably work in banking, and realize it's expensive to live there. Housing is tight. I'd be a rent. What advice can you give (those who have made the move)? Where should i look for a job? Apartment? I'm thinking Honolulu is a good place to start, but Waikiki area might be nice. I'm not going to have a car.
Answer: What kind of banking experience do you have? My sister in law works for a local bank and makes a ton of money. As far as transportation you can catch the bus to and from work with no problem. Check out monster.com and some other sites to see what kind of jobs are available out there. Hawaii has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation.
Question: Questions about visiting Kauai Hawaii? I'm vacationing in Kauai the first week in June. Where is a nice hotel to stay at that has the best beach to swim and snorkel at? Also, be in a good location for walking or busing to a local town for restaurants and visiting shops? I would like to not have to rent a car if I don't need to.
Also, there are two adventures I would like to do while visiting the island. One is to take a catamaran day trip that includes stops for snorkeling. The second is a day trip to hike, zip line, and kayak. Any suggestions for tour guides would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: The best suggestion I can give you on hotels that meet your criteria is the Marriott on Kalapaki beach. The beach is a great spot for swimming and learning to surf or kayak, and it's right next to the harbor mall with some good shopping and restaurants, plus it's the only hotel that offers shuttles to Kukui Grove shopping center where you can find more restaurants and shopping. Our public transportation isn't very good, so I wouldn't be relying on the bus if I were you. Renting a car isn't necessary, but if you're looking to see as much of the island as possible it is recommended. Check out Hotwire for some good deals.
