Honolulu History
Question: What's the history of Honolulu Pipeline Surf Riders? I am a beginner surfer and would like to know more about history of surfing. Thanks!
Answer: Pipe (Bonzai Pipeline) is a wave located on the North Shore of the island of Oahu. Honolulu and the popular Waikiki Beach are located on the South side of the island.
Pipe is a very dangerous and powerful wave that breaks at 3 spots with the main one over *very* shallow reef.
"While there are stories of undocumented attempts to surf it, Californian Phil Edwards is noted as the first to ride it successfully in 1961. Filmmaker Bruce Brown captured the wave from shore, and by the time Edwards was back in his car, three other guys were out." - Surfline
Nearly a dozen people have died there. In 2005, Malik Joyeux died after hitting getting caught under the lip of a wave. It's not clear exactly what happened but he was knocked unconscious and had a head laceration. Story and photos: http://www.surfline.com/surfnews/article...
The following movies may interest you: Step Into Liquid, Riding Giants, and Blue Crush. You can find those and other surfing movies at your local public library for free.
You can watch the annual Pipe Masters surfing contest live via webcast each December by visiting: http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/

Question: What is the history of Honolulu?
Answer: Honolulu is the capital as well as the most populous community of the State of Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language, honolulu means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter." The census-designated place (CDP) is located along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu. The term also refers to the District of Honolulu (see Geography below). As of July 1, 2004, the United States Census Bureau estimate for Honolulu puts the population at 377,260 and that of the city and county (essentially, the Island of Oahu) at 900,000. In Hawaii, local governments operate only at the county level, and the City & County of Honolulu encompasses all of the Island of Oahu (approximately 600 square miles).
It is not known when Honolulu was first settled by the original Polynesian migrants to the archipelago. Oral histories and artifacts indicate that there was a settlement where Honolulu now stands in the 12th century. However, after Kamehameha I conquered Oahu in the Battle of Nuuanu Pali, he moved his royal court from the Island of Hawaii to Waikiki in 1804. His court later relocated, in 1809, to what is now downtown Honolulu.
Captain William Brown of England was the first foreigner to sail, in 1794, into what is now Honolulu Harbor. More foreign ships would follow, making the port of Honolulu a focal point for merchant ships traveling between North America and Asia.
In 1845, Kamehameha III moved the permanent capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from Lahaina on Maui to Honolulu. He and the kings that followed him transformed Honolulu into a modern capital, erecting buildings such as St. Andrew's Cathedral, Iolani Palace, and Aliiolani Hale. At the same time, Honolulu became the center of commerce in the Islands, with descendants of American missionaries establishing major businesses in downtown Honolulu.
Despite the turbulent history of the late 19th century and early 20th century, which saw the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, Hawaii's subsequent annexation by the United States, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Honolulu would remain the capital, largest city, and main airport and seaport of the Hawaiian Islands.
Second in size to Pearl Harbor is the Ala Wai Yacht basin where most of the Island's pleasure craft embark for coastal and inter island voyages. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...
An economic and tourism boom following statehood brought rapid economic growth to Honolulu and Hawaii. Modern air travel would bring thousands, eventually millions (per annum) of visitors to the Islands. Today, Honolulu is a modern city with numerous high-rise buildings, and Waikiki is the center of the tourism industry in Hawaii, with thousands of hotel rooms.
Question: Who is a buff of the history of Hawaii? For an article in an automobile history journal, a friend is doing some research into the life of a prominent businessman (now deceased) from Honolulu.
The "official" historical sources, like the state history society and the Chamber of Commerce, don't have much information on him. Anybody have any links for amateur historians familiar with the business and automotive history of Hawaii, specifically Honolulu?
Answer: If you're really serious about writing a historically accurate article, I suggest that you contact the Hawai'i Pacific Collection at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa; they have an amazing collection of historical documentation and materials that pertains to Hawai'i.

Question: please tell me the history behind house at 1619 makiki street in honolulu?
Answer: Well, you could start with the local register of deeds to see who the owners were and trace back the chain of ownership to when the house was built. Then you could cross check old newspapers to see if the house has made the news at any time.
I'll admit to being a little curious as to why you're looking for this information--was this house significant in Hawaiian history, perhaps having some connection to royalty?
Question: What is the sickest and most evil act ever committed in US history? By this I mean BY Americans to other people or to themselves. So it EXCLUDES events like "9/11" and the Japanese attack on Honolulu.

Question: Was Hawaii forced to become a U.S. state, if yes then why? and do they like being a U.S. state? Hawaii, United States, U.S., U.S.A., military, 1959, state, history, honolulu,
Also if your from there tell me how you feel
Answer: The two previous answers are correct. On point, though, the aboriginal Hawaiians, that is, descendants of its original inhabitants at the time the US took over their land, are a minority right now, so the decision to achieve statehood was taken by people who went to Hawaii after it became a US Territory.
Question: Do's & Don'ts In Travelling To Waikiki. Honolulu, Hi.? What activities are there involved In A "Luau"?
Is an educational, guided excurcion of The Island and Its history
a more practical choice than the above?
Answer: The Polynesian Cultural center is great if you want an all day educational event featuring all of the islands it has a luau at the end and a separate Polynesian show. If you want just the Luau and some education before Paradise Cove has the best Luau some games, Mai tais, and a bus from Waikiki. I enjoyed Paradise Cove most of all few luaus I have been to.

Question: Hawaiian history? How did Peltier Avenue in Honolulu Hawaii get it's name?
Answer: Hi, I think I searched the whole web and found nothiing. The only thing I found related to "Peltier" is this:
Appeal For the Release of Leonard Peltier
Amnesty International is appealing for the release from prison of Leonard Peltier, an Anishnabe-Lakota Indian, who is serving two consecutive life-sentences for the murders of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. The FBI agents, Ronald Williams and Jack Coler, were shot at point-blank range after being wounded in a gunfight with Indian activists on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on 26 June 1975. Peltier fled to Canada. He was extradited to the USA and convicted of the murders in 1977
Good luck on finding an answer to your question.
