Maui Board
Question: What are boogie board rentals like in Maui? Can anyone tell me if boogie board rentals in Maui are good quality for an experienced boarder or should I try and take my own?
Answer: You can rent good quality boogie boards at the Maui Dive Shop and they have stores on all parts of the island. Otherwise, many people purchase them when they get here.
Here is their website.

Question: question about going on a honeymoon to Oahu or Maui? I am looking to book a honeymoon at a resort in either Oahu or Maui. I am 24 years old and am looking for a place with a nice beach where I can relax and also catch some waves with a body board. My fiancé is wants to go to a resort where it is romantic and tranquil where she can relax and be pampered. We both like to shop, eat well, and enjoy nightlife as well. Can anyone steer me in the right direction either a resort in Oahu or Maui?
Answer: Oahu is your best bet. It has what both of you want. In Waikiki there are a bunch of hotel options there, majority are really nice and have spas. Plus Waikiki Beach is right there.
I loved The Marriott Waikiki Resort and Spa. It was romantic at night, but every hotel is like that.
Question: Has anyone ever run into Box Jellyfish in Maui? I read in a book that 9-10 days after the full moon each month, box jelly- fish swarm the beaches in Maui. Since they can be deadly I am a little concerned since we are going to be there at that time and I love boogie boarding and really want to snorkel everyday. Thanks.
Answer: Sometimes you just have to wonder where people get their information. I have lived on Maui over 35 years and have never ever seen "box jelly fish swarm the beaches on Maui". So, I would say, don't worry about it. You do have the time frame right. The box jelly fish are particularly fond of the island of Oahu. Box jellyfish, Carybdea alata and Carybdea rastonii, regularly swarm to Hawaii's Leeward shores 9 to 10 days after the full moon. Affected areas include Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park, as well as Hanauma Bay, and may also include ocean areas and beach front up to and including the Wai`anae Coast. (All on Oahu). This is not to say that anyone, in any ocean, anywhere in the world cannot get stung by one, as you are in their habitat. Let's just suffice it say, that I have never been stung by one. As far as the comment about the sharks, you are more likely to get struck by lightning than get bit by a shark. Just use common sense when entering the water. Don't swim at night or go in the water if it is murky.
Question: Im going to Maui for the first time in may. Any advice for a 1st time surfer? I live in Dallas, TX (land locked) & have wakeboarded avidly for 10 years but have never been surfing. I am going to Hawaii for my honeymoon & need advice on whether to get lessons, what kind of board to rent & where to go. I would like to do a little longboarding with my fiance for one day, then trade the long board in & find some bigger swells (4-5ft)
Do I have false expextations thinking I can ride these waves?
P.S. I am a very comfortable in the water & not scared of getting pounded & tossed around by the ocean
Answer: go to honolua bay and just watch. you won't learn anything useful, but the kind of talent coming off that island right now is unreal. just sit back and enjoy and contemplate how hard they have worked to get that good.
Question: Fun Maui beaches & resorts for 21-year-old & friend? We're going to Maui in January. The beaches in West Maui look great, but someone said S. Maui would be better in winter. Is that true?
Where are good beaches and condos for 21-year-olds to have fun and meet people. We'll be with my parents, but they are easy-going.
We love to play volleyball and boogie board and also sleep and tan, dance and shop.
Thanks!
Answer: West Side would be best for waves in January (unless you ride monster waves, then North Side). South Side should be calmer and great for swimming and snorkeling. January you should be able to catch a good whale-watching cruise out of Maalaea or Lahaina.
Unless tourism picks up quite a bit between now and then, there may not be anybody for you to meet except us locals. On the other hand, it can be kind of nice to have half a great restaurant to yourself. Otherwise, both west side and south side tend to have lots of visitors, young and old. If you didn't have the parents with you, I'd tell you to stay at the Banana Bungalow in Wailuku. Lots of Americans and Europeans in their twenties over there, a real happenin' social scene. And there are lots of windsurfers and kiteboarders at Hookipa Beach, a bit east of OGG.
Question: Has anyone gotten married on Maui in Hawaii? Everyone in my contacts will be rolling their eyes in a second because I am changing my wedding AGAIN. I've just been so disappointed with some changes that were made & I'm not at all interested in planning this wedding anymore. So, I finally talked my fiance into getting married on the beach in Maui, just the two of us and then have our honeymoon. He's actually really happy now that I listed the pros & cons. He's totally on board & I am SO HAPPY!
Question: Any particular hotel or area of Maui you could recommend? I've looked online but it's just so much information. I was hoping to get an actual recommendation from someone. Thanks!
Almost forgot . . . what about the marriage license? I was going to apply for it tomorrow but I'm in CA. How does that work? Thanks!
Ha ha! Thanks Stamper! I'm so excited!
Answer: Hiii :) Congrats....I'm getting married on Maui on the 21st of this month! :) We opted for the destination wedding, also, after a giant headache of wedding planning. We are using Maui Wedding Planners to coordinate everything for us...a friend recommended them & their photography/videography quality & I've been really happy with my communication with them so far! We are staying at a resort on the western side of the island...but having our ceremony at Makena Cove on the south side. Google pics..it's beautiful! I've been told that it's better to get married on the southern end because there are less swimmers on the beaches and also less rain. (it's a 1.5 hour drive from the western end) As far as the license, you can download the form online and fill it out and fax it to the health dept. nearest to your hotel before you get there. Then you make an appt. and pay $65 cash directly to the dept. agent. All you need is some form of ID and you've got a marriage license! Hope this helps! Good luck with everything :)
Question: Can someone give me any bodyboarding tips? I live in maui, hawaii and I recently took a really good interest in bodyboarding. Can anyone give me any tips from beginning to end? I usually just go shorebreak body boarding because im still starting. It's really hard for me to catch a wave even with my fins on. is there any site you know that have videos or pictures showing step by step?
Answer: Your best bet is to just go with a friend who is really good, you'll learn a lot more from them than the internet.
Question: Waves in Maui? I'm going to Maui in mid-May. How are the waves this time of year? We're looking to primarily do some boogie-boarding and a little bit of surfing. I'd say we're intermediate boogie-boarders and beginner surfers. We're not looking for enormous waves, nor are we looking for baby waves-- something in between. If you could name some worthwhile beaches near Kaanapali, that'd be great. Thanks in advance! -A Haole
Answer: Lahaina Harbor is a good place to go....Also a Place in Kihei called old mans is a fun place..... Lahaina Harbor has waves that push pretty good and Old mans has really long rides..... have fun
Question: Surfing in Maui? Longboard vs. Shortboard? I have gone surfing 4 times. This is my second time going to Maui for consecutive years. Last year I went to Launiupoko Beach Park. I rode a longboard (maybe 7-8 ft.) and the waves were very small (about knee high) but really fun and easy to catch. I got up easily, and this year I am hoping for some bigger breaks than knee high, maybe about waist high. Also, I was wondering if I could use a shortboard since i have no trouble catching waves or turning on a longboard.
My two main questions are:
Where can i find a moderate break in West Maui, Hawaii? (Lahaina, etc.) I am going in August.
and also:
Could i ride a shortboard? I always rent two boards so is it worth getting one short?
Answer: Perhaps you should stick to the long board as you have only surfed four times and may not be able to handle a short board. The waves in Hawaii, no matter what island, are very unpredictable, so remember to be careful, especially of the coral reefs that surround the islands. =P
Question: I love to skimboard but here in Texas but waves aren't that great so if you know of any primo spots tell me! Also if you know of any great boards suited for this area let me know cuz im thinkin of gettin a Maui Skim board and I want other peoples opinions on them.
Answer: Wher in Texas. The waves really vary. Iv'e seen some substantial waves around Padre Island - Aranzas Pass
