Maui Information

Question: Anyone have any comforting information about sharks attacks and scuba divers in West Maui? I'm going to Maui soon and I am completely afraid of sharks. I've never seen one and I certainly don't want to. Looking up recent shark attacks isn't helping my fear. I love to scuba dive, but the shark infested waters of Maui are freaking me out and I don't want to scuba dive on my trip anymore!

Answer: First, I don't think I would call Maui's waters shark infested. Second, don't let the news or Hollywood educate you on sharks. Do some real research about sharks. You'll find a couple facts about sharks: a. Humans are not on the menu. We smell funny. We taste funny. While scuba diving we make a TON of noise. b. Most sharks are scavengers. They are going to go for the easy meal and not the one that is swimming fine. c. Sharks have terrible vision. Try not to look like a sea lion or seal. Sharks prefer high protein meals like sea lions, seals, tuna, etc. Lastly, scuba divers and shark attacks fall into two main categories: 1. Spear fishing: a fish in the throes of death excite sharks. Avoid diving around people that are spearfishing. 2. Defensive action: Don't grab a sleeping shark (like a nurse shark). Even though they look calm, they are still a shark.
