Molokai Maui
Question: 4 Maui questions- What airlines take you from Maui to Molokai and Lanai? We're going to Maui and would like to hop over to Molokai & Lanai.
1-What airlines fly there?
2-Is it expensive?
3-How long are the flights?
4-How big are the planes (propellers or jet?)
Answer: Go airlines, and just for your own knowledge two of there pilots are currently being investigated for going to sleep while the plane was in the air.... lol
Question: We are going to Maui and want to see Molokai. Will we need a car there for a few hours? We have been to Maui before but never Molokai... we aren't really tour people; we like to explore on our own... is the ferry landing adjoined to a town? or within walking distance of a beach good for snorkeling?
Could we rent bicycles at the landing? or a car if we have to?
Anyone who knows I really appreciate this.
Amazingly, I can't find any of this info in a guide book or a internet site (so maybe all of my questions can't be answered with a yes...lol)
Answer: If I were going, I'd rent a car. Walking limits how much you can see. If you are going to the leper colony, there is additional transportation to be arranged.
If all you want is a beach and snorkeling, go to Molokini, it's the extinct volcano between Maui and Molokai.
Question: What was the name of the island that had Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Molokai? I was told by a ranger on the Big Island that it used to be one big island. What was it called.
And why is it 4 islands now? Did the big island sink, or did the ocean level rise? (or how much of both?)
Thanks.
The current islands were peaks on the one large island.
Answer: At one time, it is said, the islands were part of one large island known as Maui Nui.
---
About 300,000 to 400,000 years ago, Maui Nui, which grew from west to east, subsided to form two islands, one consisting of Penguin Bank, Moloka'i, and Lanai, and the other consisting of Maui and Kaho'olawe. Kaho'olawe then separated from Maui, and finally Lanai separated from Moloka'i, both within the last 100,000 to 200,000 years. Penguin Bank probably submerged within the last several hundred thousand years.
Question: Maui to Molokai ferry? Does the Maui to Molokai ferry accept cars or is it a 100% passenger ferry? Any kama'aina responses will be greatly appreciated.
Mahalo nui loa !
Answer: No cars. No way. When you see the boat, you'll understand. The Molokai Princess holds a few dozen passengers, and the Maui Princess holds a couple dozen more. I've only been on the bigger boat a couple times, once for a whale watching field trip. Most of the time, it's the Molokai Princess. I know the guy that maintains the boat, and I know one of the owners.
The big question on that ferry is where to sit. Lots of local folks will sit inside, watch TV, even sleep. But if the ocean swells are 3-6 feet, or even 16 feet, some of us have to keep our eyes on the horizon. The humbug with sitting up top is a) the soot, and b) the occasional wave that smacks you in the face! If you do go up top, feel the seat before you sit down on it, or bring papertowels and a raincoat.
My advice:
1) Buy Extra Strong Ginger Brew at Down to Earth to drink while you're at sea, and a squishable cooler to keep it cold. I've suggested to one of the owners that they stock that stuff, but she ignored me. Shoots, we should sit on Kauanakakai Wharf and sell it for a fundraiser!
2) Sit where you can catch a breeze, not where it's hot and stuffy.
3) The roughest part of that channel is the middle part of the journey (and the winter the roughest time of year). Sit up top for the first 20-30 minutes out of Lahaina, and the last 20-30 minutes past Kamalo, when it calms down again. For the middle half hour or hour, try to sit near the part where you board the ferry.
Question: Kauai, Maui, or Molokai? Which is the most Hawaiian, culture wise, beauty, laid back?
Answer: Kauai or Molokai. Maui is too affected by tourism. It is beatiful and fun, but not as laid back.
Question: We have been on every major island in Hawaii except Molokai, whats to do there beyond lying on the beach? Were going back for our 7th trip there and have seen a lot, however this time we will spend 4 days on Oahu, a week on Maui, then take the ferry to Molokai. How much time should we spend there and what is there to do except go down to F. Damiens camp and museum? Would like some advice thanks!
Answer: Why don't you hire a yacht and sail!
Question: Are there any veterinarians on Molokai? I've looked through the yellowpages and online and I've only found vets on Maui. If so does anyone know which towns they were in on Molokai.
Thanks!

Another idea is to call molokai city directory and ask them...they'll likely have better information then what you can find on the net
