Oahu Mountain
Question: (Math:Trig) What mountain peaks are visible from the SE shore of Oahu? So the question is basically asking which mountains peaks can be seen from Oahu.
Island Distance(Mi) Mountain Height(ft)
Lanai - 65 - Lanaihale - 3,370
Maui - 110 - Haleakala - 10,023
Hawaii - 190 - Mauna Kea - 13,796
Molokai - 40 - Kamakou - 4,961
A) Radius of earth= 3960 mi.
Determine angle formed at the center of the earth.
B) Determine length of the hypotenuse.
Is Lanai-hale visible from Oahu?
C) Repeat parts A & B for the other 3 islands
D) Which 3 Mountains are visible from Oahu?
I appreciate any thing you can assist with
Answer: This is the correct way to work this problem:
r = 3960
c = 2pi3960 = 24881 miles
60(360/24881) = 0.86817 degree (Lanai)
3960/cos 0.86817 = 3960.4415 miles
(3960.4415 - 3960)5280 = 2331 feet
3370 - 2331 = 1039 feet can be seen
110(360/24881) = 1.59176 degree (Haleakala)
3960/cos 1.59176 = 3961.287 miles
(3961.287 - 3960)5280 = 8072 feet
10023 - 8072 = 1951 feet can be seen
190(360/24881) = 2.74907 degree (Mauna Kea)
3960/cos 2.74907 = 4285.96 miles0
(4285.96 - 3960)5280 = 172106 feet
172106 - 13796 = 170727 feet below the horizon
40(360/24881) = 0.578752 degree (Kamakou)
3960/cos 0.578752 = 3960.203
(3960.203 - 3960)5280 = 1068 feet
4961 - 1068 = 3893 feet can be seen

Question: Can a nuclear bomb level mountain ranges? What would happen to the mountains on Oahu? Would the mountain ranges on the hawaiian islands withstand such a bomb blast?
Answer: it wouldnt level them, rather would creat a crater approx. 9 miles wide. it would depend on the size of the mountain, how hard the rock in the mountain is, and many other factors. It would not, however, level an entire mountain range.
Question: How is the climate in Oahu this time of year? What is the water temperature, what is the day temp outside and the evening? I am leaving tommorow for a week and plan on taking shorts and shirts and one pair of jeans and 1 windbreaker for when I go up into the mountains. I also plan on snorkeling. Any input?
how is the water?
Answer: just got back a couple of weeks ago from oahu- fabulous vacation!
The water is pretty chilly, but you get used to it after you're in!
We had a couple of days where it was raining a cool and really windy- you may make good use of that windbreaker (and might think of bringing a hoodie or sweatshirt, too) Have a great time!!!!
OH, try to find Giovanni's Shrimp Truck on north shore- good stuff!
Also go get a Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation- yum!
Waimea Bay was our favorite place to play in the bigger waves!
Question: What hotels are there on Oahu's eastern coast, near Koolau Mountains?
Answer: I can highly recommend Pat's Beach Rentals. I especially like property #23. (Sleeps 3 - great location)
http://www.patskailua.com/index.asp
These are quaint cottages with living room, kitchen, and between 1 and 4 bedrooms. Most are right on Kailua beach, great for windsurfing, body boarding, tanning. The beach has restrooms and a snack bar. Close by there's a little shop for necessities.
Staying here would be a FABULOUS relaxing vacation. Live like the locals! No maid service. No room service. No wake up calls. (But, there are alarm clocks!)
Question: Does anyone know what beaches in Oahu, within an hour drive from Honolulu, have the best sunset view in March? Hello everyone!
I'm trying to find a relatively secluded, romantic beach close to Honolulu where in March (I'm emphasizing March because as you probably know ;-) the sunset view is different throughout the year) the sunset can be seen in all its beauty, going down and touching the ocean, not mountains or roofs of houses. Could you give me some suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!
Elena.
Answer: I went to Oahu in July to visit a friend who moved there. I don't think it takes more than an hour (without traffic) to get anywhere on the island. We went from the very bottom part of the island to the very top in about 45 minutes. With traffic, however, it's a different story. Traffic there is horrible. A gorgeous beach area is Ko Olina. It's very peaceful, there aren't a ton of people, and you have to get a little slip (free) from the front gate to even get in. It's the perfect place for swimming to because there aren't really any waves because of the lagoons.
Question: Math Problem....w/ some Hawaii Mountain Peaks... Very Hard? Suppose that you are standning on the southeastern shore of Oahu and you see three mountain peaks.These are the possible mountain peaks that can be seen from Oahu.
Island Distance(mi) Mountain Height
Lanai 60 Lanaihale 3,370
Maui 110 Haleakala 10,023
Hawaii 190 Mauna Kea 13,796
Molokai 40 Kamakou 4,961
A.) Determine which of these mountains would be visible from Oahu, Consider you are standing on the shore and looking "straight out" so that your line of sight is tangent to the surface of the earth at the point where you are standing. Make a sketch of a rigth triangle formed by your sight line, the radius from the center of the earth to the point where you are standing, and the line from the center of the earth through Lanai
B.) Assuming that the radius of the Earth 3960 miles, determine the angle formed at the center of the earth.
C.) Determine the length of the hyptenuse of a triangle. Is Lanaihale visible from Oahu?
D.) Repeat parts A-C for the other three islands
E.) Which of the three mountains are visible from Oahu?
Answer: r = 3960
c = 2pi3960 = 24881 miles
60(360/24881) = 0.86817 degree (Lanai)
110(360/24881) = 1.59176 degree (Haleakala)
190(360/24881) = 2.74907 degree (Mauna Kea)
40(360/24881) = 0.578752 degree (Kamakou)
L = √(3960^2 + 60^2) = 3960.4545
0.4545 x 5280 = 2400 ft
3370 - 2400 = see top 970 ft of Lanaihale
H = √(3960^2 + 110^2) = 3961.5274
1.5274 x 5280 = 8065 ft
10023 - 8065 = see top 1958 ft of Haleakala
M = √(3960^2 + 190^2) = 3964.5554
4.5554 x 5280 = 24052 ft
10023 - 24052 = Mauna Kea is 14029 ft below horizon
K = √(3960^2 + 40^2) = 3960.202
0.202 x 5280 = 1067 ft
4961 - 1067 = see top 3894 ft of Kamakou
H = (3960)/cos(1.59176) = (3960)/(0.96808152) = 4040.1
M = (3960)/cos(2.74907) = (3960)/(0.90580163) = 4371.8
K = (3960)/cos(0.578752) = (3960)/(0.995760751) = 3976.8

Question: Is there a store on Oahu that sells Caramel Apples? ? Rocky Mountain in Waikele closed. Anyone know of any other stores? Not interested in websites that ship to Hawaii. Need an actual store.
Answer: A new coffee stand and a candy apple kiosk have opened in Ala Moana Center's food court in the former spot of a sports bar.
Swirl Candy Apple Co. and Island Vintage Coffee now sit in the space vacated by Cove Bar in the Makai Market Food Court.
Swirl, which also has a Windward Mall location, serves hand-dipped apples, frozen bananas, ice cream bars and frozen cheesecake slices.
Question: Why does it rain in Hawaii when the sky is blue? At first I thought the rain was being carried by the wind from the clouds over the mountains. (I live on Oahu near Diamond Head) but sometimes there are no clouds but it still rains?!
I've never seen that anywhere else...is it a tropical thing?
Answer: I think if you're actually feeling rain it did originate in a cloud. However tropical rain clouds can be quite small and also make relatively small raindrops, so if the trade winds are blowing (which they usually are) the raindrops can be carried a long way from the parent cloud. Also, if the drops stay aloft long enough, they may outlast the cloud that produced them.
Question: Off the beaten path places to photograph in Hawaii? I've taken all the usual pictures - Diamond Head, Chinaman's Hat, the mountains, the sunsets, Pearl Harbor, etc. - does anybody know any neat places or things to photograph on Oahu?
I've taken all the usual pictures - Diamond Head, Chinaman's Hat, the mountains, the sunsets, Pearl Harbor, etc. - does anybody know any neat places or things to photograph on Oahu?
I should've added too... we aren't able to island hop due to my husband's military rules & regs about asking for out-of-bounds leave... So we're stuck on Oahu! (oh darn! :))
Answer: I just got back from Oahu a couple of months ago. We stayed at the Hale Koa hotel on Waikiki beach. It's only for military or government families. If your husband is stationed on the base - can't remember the name - it's about a 1/2 hour to 45 minute easy bus ride.
The grounds of the Hale Koa are breathtaking. No better place on the island for taking shots of stunning gardens, birds and flowers. They also offer a wonderful luau - reported to be the best on the island. The food was great!
Want pics of sea life up close? Go to Sea Life Park. Buy the tickets in the lobby of Hale Koa or on base with your military ID and save money. For about $140.00 you can spend about 1/2 hour in a pool with dolphins. I took some super pics there - the animals are really close. If you eat at the restaurant there, you will have spectacular views with some pretty good food that you'll pay way too much for. Stay away from the milkshake shop, though. It's awful.
Next door to the Hale Koa is a hotel (Hilton?) that has a beautiful little shopping mall inside. Even have flamingos. As you face Hale Koa, there's a small road that leads into it to the right of the Hale Koa property.
Hale Koa is on Ft. DeRussy, which used to be something like 72 acres of swampland and the Royal Hunting Grounds. Our government bought it in the early 1900's and did some spectacular things with it. There is a military museum on site that isn't open on Mondays, but the gift shop sells some spectacular postcards that are early photos of Hawaii that you might enjoy. The museum is free.
Oh, there is also a rainforest on Oahu -again, check in the lobby of the Hale Koa with the travel agency. Another great source for us were the bus drivers for inside info!
Have fun! Check out the websites below.
Question: Moving to oahu for one year after graduation. Is $5,000 enough to begin the move? I found a couple of places that I can rent for only $650 a month. I will have roomates, that is why I have it so cheap. That means I have about 4 months of rent already and 4 months of food payed for, plus the ticket to get there. I will find a full time job doing something with no pressure, like working at walmart or a waiter at Chilis or something. I just want to enjoy my year off of school and work. I am 22 years and single, no attachment. Do you think I need to buy a car for that one year or can I get away with public transportation and a mountain bike? I want to explor the entire island during that year! How much more money do you think I should save up.
Answer: if you live in wai kiki (the city) you can walk everywhere. public transportation is also big there. your money should last if going to the beach satisfies you most of the time. other leisure activities can be very expensive.

From there, we drove along the coast road north and east, through narrow, very windy mountain roads, to see luxury homes and resorts and narrow but quite luscious beaches. Lunch was at a resort's seafood restaurant, the Sea House. Exquisite.
